NOTAM – norwegian center for technology in music and art – fills a number of functions in the Norwegian music scene. NOTAM contributes to knowledge building for composers, musicians and artists, students in various arts studies, through technical and theoretic work in the field of art and technology. We have at our disposal technical resources such as studios, computer labs and portable equipment, and we impart knowledge and pass on information about works both through our own arrangements and through contributions to concerts and exhibitions arranged by others. An example is the exhibition LIGHTS ON at the Astrup Fearnley Museum in the spring of 2008. We have the technological know-how and can efficiently solve problems defined by artistic requirements.
Internationally, NOTAM's network consists of leading institutions within music technology, and we contribute to the network through developmental work, participation in international projects and conferences, and as the recipient of exchange students and guest artists. Our employees annually contribute as members of various juries for music and by evaluating articles for several conferences. NOTAM is a highly requested collaborative partner, and the most important Norwegian link to the international environments for music and technology. This is apparent when looking at the inroads we have been able to provide students when helping them in their stays abroad.
NOTAM's network in Norway consists of artists, academics, and organizations or institutions with technical or creative work fields. In Norway our most important function is to deliver in the production of artistic works, either through commissions or direct developmental work, or through increasing artists' competence by providing assistance or technical resources during production. NOTAM's area of expertise covers the whole field of music and technology, and is a highly regarded adviser in this vast field.
In addition to functioning as an adviser and contributor, NOTAM also carries out own projects, often in collaboration with individuals or other institutions. Examples of this are the installation Norge – et lydrike – Norway remixed from 2002, the conference Music Technology Days in 2007, or this year's focus on Stockhausen and the sound art exhibition – both happening during the autumn of 2008.
